Working Multiple Jobs – The New Norm

It seems, no matter who you ask, working two or more jobs is the norm these days. With the cost of living increasing, but, salaries are not, it seems we are just working to live, not living to work. We are taking to working multiple jobs, just to get our bills paid.

Car Living over Building Living

Even people who work for Google are struggling to afford brick and mortar homes and are resorting to living in RV’s or camper vans near their job in Silicon Valley. They don’t have rent to pay, unless they are renting the RV and their utilities are much less.

I will add, there are people who choose to live in RV’s and camper vans voluntarily. Myself to be included in a couple of years. However, Google employees are doing it because they cannot afford to live in the area. Rents have increased at astronomically high rates in the past 10 years. Some over 300% – 800% increases because of the tech companies that set up shop in the area.

However, with all that said, it’s everyday employees with other jobs, working in other industries such as financial and medical as well as fast food, that also cannot afford to live on just one salary. The cost of living has increased, across the board, at higher rates than our salary has increased. Some people are also taking to moving in with roommates to split the bills. This cuts down on costs and allows you to build up an emergency fund or to save for retirement.

Working Multiple Jobs

For myself? I’ve got several streams of income that I rely on. My day job in a Dr’s office. My Etsy design business. A VA business that I run. And I work with Instacart as well. I also sell on Poshmark and eBay. So, I am working seven days a week to make ends meet. Now, mind you, I am still recovering from 11 months of being laid off between 2017 – 2018. So, my bills have exceeded my day jobs salary. In order for me not to file bankruptcy, I had to find other ways to make ends meet.

Those are the types of jobs that I’m working to survive in getting my bills paid off so I can buy my camper van or RV to VOLUNTARILY live my life on the road for a few years doing vendor shows for my design business. But! I will also be working other freelance jobs to bring income in as well.

When people are in dire straits, they find resourceful ways to help themselves. This is the era where you can find out of the box ways to bring in multiple streams of income. Whether because you need the money to live, or to save for your vacation or retirement.

Ways of making extra money are to find a “normal” 2nd job, freelancing or working for companies as a contractor. Think Instacart, Shipt, Amazon Flex.

  1. That’s true because the wage on a full time job only is not enough for all the expenses. Specially for those who have families to sustain. And social media is very much useful nowadays.
