Roads Less Traveled

Recently I moved to Pennsylvania from Delaware. This is the first time I’ve lived out of Delaware. I was nervous, and still am! I don’t know anyone around here. It’s a little nerve wracking when you move to a new location and all you feel capable of doing is staying in your home and waiting for time to fly by.

One Saturday, I decided I didn’t want to stay at home. So, I looked for different places I could go. I wanted to get to know my new area.  I know I’ll meet people up there, but, I can’t wait for it to happen. So, I got in my car and off I went. I came across the bridge above. It was huge!  It is the longest covered bridge in Lancaster County. The “road” is wooden. I parked a little way from the openings, and walked down the hill to the Octoraro Creek. People love to fish here, and even with the speed of the water, it’s good for wading and just sitting in and watching the fish go by :).

After I left there, I decided to drive around.  Without a GPS or any direction of where I was going.  I do this occasionally, and while people find this stressful, I truly enjoy back road driving and finding little treasures.

Which way do I go?

I came to a four way intersection.  As there were no people on the road, I sat there for several minutes, trying to decide where to go. I decided to go straight. Figured, if I can find it again, I’ll go another direction the next time :). After a little ways, I saw a side street that wasn’t even paved. It was just a rocky road.

As you can see from the wheel tracks, it’s a buggy! Yep, I live in Amish Country.  I stopped, but, decided to continue on. If it was a driveway, I’d make a new friend or get run off lol.  The land around this area is truly beautiful.

I actually backed up after driving past this land. Again, there were no people on the road, so, I didn’t have to worry.  I stopped in the middle of the rocky road, got out and took this shot. I may not necessarily believe in God, but, I was feeling a little more that this was certainly Gods land!

There is so much farmland around my area.  The pictures I’ve posted here are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the beauty. I came to the conclusion, I’m not sure if I’ll be able to move back to suburbia. It was just so peaceful and tranquil I was ready to climb over this wired fence and lay down and enjoy nature with these animals.

I may not know where I’ll end up in a few years, but, I’ll tell you, it’s going to be someplace like this. When I went to bed that night, it was possibly the most relaxed sleep I’ve had in a LONG time.

I strongly suggest that people take more time to enjoy the scenery that you WANT to enjoy. This may not be the location you are currently living in. Don’t be afraid to go out and get lost on roads less traveled.  Or, roads more traveled if you prefer. You never know what you may discover about yourself :).

  1. I would love to get back to VA, they have the pretties scenery. I also want to take a trip to the New England coast. You never know what you might find off the beaten path. Dirt roads are pretty awesome.

  2. We have family in Lancaster County. It’s such a beautiful place to visit and I love all the Amish Country and farmland in the area. We have a coffee shop in Lititz, PA, that we love to visit. It is called Tomato Pie Cafe!

  3. What a fun time, I live in New Hampshire and New England area drives are the best. Although I haven’t ever been off the East Coast so I don’t have experiences to compare. I Love that you took a nice drive, sounds and looks gorgeous!

    • Lisa, the funny thing is, I did this YEARS ago. I was dealing with some things, got in my car and just went. Five hours later, I figured I should head home. Thinking I was only an hour and a half from home, because I thought all the roads I took were within a certain diameter. I ended up FOUR hours from home. I had to stop and call my mom collect because I had no change. Of course, I had my MAC card, yes, it was that long ago, lol. Thankfully I had cash for gas! My mom was SO mad at me, my boyfriend was panicking… Before GPS and Cellphones! I only found out how far I was because I stopped at a site that construction was going on. They couldn’t believe how far I was from home lol.

  10. I live in Maryland and one of the things I love is that I am five minutes from Amish Country. I’m also five minutes from Washington, DC. So whatever scene I’m in need of I can get without going far from home.

    I think about moving away, but our family is here and the kids are so close to their Aunt/Uncle and grandparents.

  11. Looks lovely! Very peaceful and calm. Something i would love when it comes to traveling and visiting. Especially being from Canada, I would love to visit and see more of the US. this looks like a place to check out! Amish country is something I’ve never seen before, would LOVE to!

    • I’d probably miss FL life too! I have a friend that lived right over the line in MD. She and her family made the move to FL. Said the next time they move will be after their girls move out and they become full time RVers 🙂
